Michael Roy and Diane

Michael Roy and Diane Maltby are one of Florida’s most versatile and talented duos specializing in wedding and reception music. They have participated in hundreds of nuptial events in this area. Brides and their families and friends are always thrilled by the excellence of their music.

Michael Roy plays more than 30 instruments, including the modern flute and classical and acoustic guitars, and many baroque and Renaissance instruments. He is a trained singer, with a BA in music from the Univ. of Miami. He completed his master’s course work in music – theory and composition. Michael is also director of the professional chorale, The Redland Singers, and he is director of music at Immanuel Presbyterian Church.

Miss Maltby plays the digital keyboard, with authentic sounds for grand piano, harpsichord and organ. She is an accomplished musician with many years of experience in the field of accompanying. Diane is also the accompanist for The Redland Singers, as well as pianist and music staff member at Immanuel Presbyterian Church.

Optional trio situation: Michael Roy and Ms. Maltby often add a violinist to accomplish a classical-baroque trio. Both the basic duo and violin-trio are available for all weddings and receptions.

See below only a few of the beautiful and rare instruments Michael Roy uses in the “Troubadour” events. Note also the various wedding-related services available from Michael Roy Music Productions.

The Fantastic Instruments

Michael Roy - Alto

This is the baroque alto recorder.

The family of recorders also commonly includes the soprano, tenor and bass.
The bass recorder pictured below
is a more ancient, Renaissance-era instrument.
Renaissance recorders have a throatier sound.
Baroque recorders have a more delicate tone quality.

Michael Roy - Bass

Michael Roy - Bagpipes

Michael Roy uses the bagpipes very effectively for
awesome recessionals in wedding ceremonies.
The Galician pipes are perfect for weddings
in that they have a melodious sound
without giving up the impressive power of the bonny pipes.

Michael Roy - Michael and Diane

Although Michael Roy plays many modern and ancient woodwinds (flutes, recorders, and double reeds),
the most versatile instruments remain his guitar and Diane's keyboard.

Wedding/Reception Events and Musical Services

The Wedding

First, Michael Roy will provide "the incidental" (or "occasional") music, that is, all music that comes before the beginning of the ceremony. This music is usually done "troubadour-style," in which Michael Roy walks about the venue with his instruments, as is feasible. Ms. Maltby provides the appropriate keyboard accompaniment to match the instruments and era of music. If the violin is included, it will play in duet with Michael Roy's various instruments. When the ceremony begins, the duo (or trio) will play one or two processionals to bring in the wedding party. Often two different processionals are used: one for the bride only and one for the rest of the procession. Appropriate mid-ceremony music is always available for the lighting of candles, citing of scripture, etc. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the duo (or trio) will sound the recessional to take the wedding party and the attendees out.

The Pre-Reception

Also called the cocktail reception, this brief gathering for the guests before the main event is an excellent venue for the "Troubadour" presentation. Michael Roy adds other interesting and rare instruments to those seen in the wedding ceremony. When other entertainment is scheduled for the main reception, he can do both the ceremony and the pre-reception. He and his accompanist can also be contracted for any single event.

The Main Reception

For this main event, Michael Roy will set up his spectacular collection of modern and ancient instruments. He brings over 20 for the display, and will play all or most of them during the reception. The guests always enjoy perusing the instruments on display, and often make requests of certain ones they would like to hear played. Michael will stroll about the venue, alternating between woodwinds, strings, and voice/guitar for a thoroughly entertaining and versatile performance. The guests invariably remark, not only on the skill borne with each instrument, but the sheer number of talents involved. Diane accompanies the tour de force from her station at the keyboard, matching piano, harpsichord and organ to each instrument and each era. This is the extraordinary Troubadour Reception

Our Variety of Musical Groups and Styles

Classical-Baroque Duo (or Trio): recommended for wedding ceremonies, parties, and receptions (or similar events) from one to three hours or more. About twenty musical instruments are employed in wedding receptions, and about six to eight instruments in ceremonies. The instruments are set up on display in a convenient location at the reception site. Michael Roy will perform on the instruments troubadour-style if feasible and appropriate, i.e., walking about the venue. The instruments commonly presented in the Duo (or Trio): modern flute, baroque and Renaissance recorders, modern guitar, and lute. Other useful instruments are bagpipes, psaltry, modern bass flute, assorted ancient double reeds, and other unusual instruments. In the wedding ceremony, the instrumentation is limited by the constraints of time to the flute, several recorders and guitar. The bagpipes, lute and psaltry may also be used in the wedding ceremony by previous arrangement. With the Trio act, a violin is added to the ensemble.

Duo-Band: If only contemporary music, light pop, loves songs, ballads, and folk music is required for the reception, Michael Roy and Ms. Maltby can be contracted as the Duo-Band. This duo does not include the violin, and deemphasizes the classical and baroque styles of music. Michael Roy is a accomplished singer-guitarist with a wide repertoire of contemporary music suitable for light dancing, including the "first dance." The Duo-Band employs the keyboard, guitar, vocals, and digital percussion to simulate the sound of a light pop trio. This option is for receptions where more contemporary music is preferred.

Combo Duo (or Trio): If a wide range of music is requested which includes both the baroque and classical music, as well as pop/contemporary music, or music for dancing including the "first dance", this calls for the Combo Duo (or Trio - the violin can be added). With the Combo Duo (or Trio), more musical instruments are included. A larger setup is needed, with additional sound and electronic equipment, to make possible both extremes of the musical spectrum.
